On January 11, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt designated the Grand Canyon a United States National Monument.
During a visit to the Grand Canyon five years earlier, he said, “The Grand Canyon fills me with awe… Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity, and loveliness.” For his success in protecting about 230 million acres of land across the country, Roosevelt is known as the “Conservationist President.”
Today, conservation efforts are just as important as ever. Proposals to build resorts, hydroelectric dams, and uranium mines threaten the natural beauty of the Canyon. The Grand Canyon Trust was founded in 1985 to safeguard the Grand Canyon and the Colorado Plateau by fighting such proposals. One example of the non-profit’s success is removing 16 million tons of uranium poisoning in the Colorado River.
